The Shrink Next Door, a limited drama series about an exploitative psychiatrist, starring Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Kathryn Hahn, and Casey Wilson and directed by Michael Showalter, debuted on Friday, November 12, 2021, with episodes scheduled to be released weekly until December 17.
The series, which is produced by Civic Center Media and MRC Television, will be initially available exclusively on Apple TV+ worldwide.
In Canada, Apple TV+ is available for $5.99 per month or $59.99 per year when billed annually (all prices are before applicable sales taxes), with a seven-day free trial available to first-time subscribers, and longer trials available if you purchase a new Apple device (and occasionally other devices) and activate the trial promptly after purchase.
Apple TV+ can be streamed through the Apple TV app, which is available on Apple devices like the Apple TV 4K and iPad, as well as a wide variety of third-party streaming devices and smart TVs. Even without the app, if you have a TV or device that supports Apple AirPlay, you can use any recent iPhone or iPad to cast Apple TV+ content to another screen.
We realize there may be some Canadians who might be interested in this series but either don't have access to the necessary connection or devices. Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that an alternative option will be available in the short term.
At best, at some point after the series is fully released on Apple TV+, the producers may be able to offer digital sales of the show on transactional platforms like Google Plays Movies & TV or the Apple TV Store, and (less likely) release the show on DVD or release it on another linear TV channel.
That's because Apple won't own the underlying copyrights or distribution rights to the show – just the streaming rights. That means that, as has been reported for the producers of other Apple TV+ original series like Ted Lasso, it seems likely that MRC will be able to eventually offer the show through other venues, though it may have to wait several years to do so.
That said, we don't know the exact terms of the producers' agreement with Apple; terms that apply to one Apple TV+ program do not necessarily apply to all programs.
Hence for now, Apple TV+ will be the only authorized way to watch The Shrink Next Door in Canada.
