This Week in WCIW #48

Welcome to the December 6, 2021 edition of This Week in WCIW, the weekly newsletter from Where Can I Watch – covering the latest news on where TV shows and movies will be available in Canada.

With last week's newsletter filled by our December guide, we're catching up on a few items from the past couple of weeks. Even so, programming news is starting to slow down with the holiday season ramping up, so a lot of what we have this week is updates on new and returning Canadian shows coming in January, plus some details on free previews underway during the holiday season.

Programming news

  • CBC Television has announced premiere dates for winter programming, including new seasons of Pretty Hard Cases (starting Wednesday, January 5) and Coroner (Thursday the 6th), and new sitcoms Son of a Critch (Tuesday, January 4) and Run the Burbs (also starting on January 5).

  • Food Network Canada has announced its winter lineup, including a second season of Canadian series Wall of Chefs debuting on Monday, January 3.

  • Love Nature, which is in free preview on TV services providers now through January 5, will be debuting several new documentary specials and miniseries during December, including the three-part Shadowlands about animals in and around Antarctica, and several Natural World specials concerning topics like leopards and otters.

Other notes

  • You may have seen this in last week's monthly guide, but just to reiterate: Hollywood Suite is in free preview throughout December, until January 5, through participating TV service providers (but not its over-the-top Prime Video channel).

As well, we've neglected to mention until now that Super Channel's Heart & Home channel, with its wall-to-wall Christmas movie lineup, is similarly in free preview on TV providers all month until January 2.

If you have a "skinny basic" cable service, there are several other ad-supported channels that you may not normally get, like Showcase, W Network, and CTV Comedy and Sci-Fi, that will be on free preview from at least December 20 to January 2.
