Where can I watch “The Match” 2022 in Canada?

Update (December 10, 2022): We haven't been able to make time for a full update, but the second 2022 edition of The Match taking place on Saturday, December 10, between Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy vs. Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, will air on Sportsnet One in Canada, and will be available to stream on Sportsnet Now. The event is also scheduled to air on HLN as with the previous edition, as described below, and was not blacked out there when we checked on Rogers Cable shortly after coverage began. Pre-event coverage started at 6:00 p.m. ET, and the event itself begins at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Since 2018, a series of match-play golf events has been sporadically held under the title The Match (also known as Capital One's The Match after its title sponsor). The sixth edition of this event, in which two teams of football quarterbacks will face off in a "shamble" format – Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers vs. Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes – is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 beginning at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time.

Turner Sports, which is now the American sports division of Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), has held global broadcast and streaming rights to the event since its inception, though after a poor experience trying to sell the first event through pay-per-view, the events have aired live on TNT in the United States since the second edition.

Canadians should be able to watch this edition of The Match through HLN (formerly CNN Headline News), which is one of the WBD channels that is scheduled to simulcast the event, with pre-event coverage starting at 6:30 p.m. ET on June 1. Although HLN is, of course, approved for Canadian distribution as a news channel, which occasionally affects the kinds of programming the channel is able to carry into Canada, we recall past editions of The Match being carried by HLN, without blackout, on this side of the border.

If you have a cable subscription that includes the channel, you may be able to stream HLN through the CNNgo website, and CNN apps for mobile and streaming devices. However, you will need to authenticate through your cable provider to watch more than a few minutes of coverage (Bell, Rogers, Shaw and Telus are supported but many smaller Canadian providers are not).

Past editions of The Match were also simulcast on CNN International (which is not the same channel as the American version of CNN, but is carried separately by some Canadian providers). This does not appear to be the case this time, however.

If you do not have a TV provider subscription, it appears that coverage will also be available to Canadians through GolfTV, WBD's international golf streaming service. As of this writing, GolfTV's "Live Pass" subscription costs C$9.99 per month (plus applicable sales taxes), but a seven-day free trial is available to first-time subscribers.
