Where can I watch the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards in Canada?

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards, honouring the best primetime television programming that aired in the United States from June 2021 to May 2022, took place on Monday, September 12, 2022, at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, with the ceremony hosted this year by Kenan Thompson.

The ceremony aired live on NBC in the United States, and CTV in Canada, Monday, September 12, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific time, which is the local time at the venue in California. That equates to 8:00 p.m. Eastern time and 9:30 p.m. Newfoundland time.

Can I stream the Emmys in Canada?

Yes, you could stream the ceremony live if you get CTV through a paid cable, satellite, fibre, or similar TV service provider that supports the CTV website and app. You need to sign in with your TV service provider credentials in order to be able to stream the Emmy Awards live. Information on supported mobile and connected devices is available on this CTV support page. Some providers may also offer access to CTV through their own apps (e.g. the Rogers Ignite and Bell Fibe TV mobile apps).

If you do not receive a traditional Canadian TV service (or use one that does not allow for streaming through the CTV app or that provider's own apps), you will not be able to stream the Emmys live in Canada (in a way that is authorized by the event's organizers, the Television Academy). In this sense, there is no entirely "free" way to stream the ceremony live in Canada.

However, as of Tuesday morning (September 13), you can now stream the Emmys on-demand through the CTV website and app, for free and without authentication, likely until a week after the ceremony (i.e. until September 19). This is consistent with what has happened with other big awards shows CTV carries like the Oscars.

NBC simulcast the Emmys in the U.S. on its direct-to-consumer streaming service, but Peacock is not offered in Canada (and even if it was, most likely it would not offer the Emmys here due to CTV's Canadian broadcast rights). Crave, the streaming service owned by CTV parent Bell Media which is also available direct-to-consumer, is not streaming the ceremony, either live or on-demand.

Do I have any other option to watch the Emmys live, for free, in Canada?

Depending on your location, you may be able to receive a local CTV station for free over the air. In some regions near the U.S. border like Windsor, Ontario, which is across the river from Detroit, you may even be able to get a local NBC affiliate. This requires a digital-capable television and appropriate antenna setup.
