Where can I watch "Candy" in Canada?

Candy (also known as Candy: A Death in Texas), a five-part crime drama limited series starring Jessica Biel as Candy Montgomery, the real-life Texas housewife accused of murdering a neighbour (played by Melanie Lynskey) in 1980, premiered on Hulu in the United States on May 9, 2022, and has received generally positive reviews from critics.

However, Hulu is not available on an authorized basis in most countries outside the United States, and thus Candy was not released in many international markets, including Canada, until late July 2022. The full series is now available in Canada on Disney+, the streaming service owned by The Walt Disney Company.

As of this writing in mid-2022, a subscription to the Disney+ streaming service costs $11.99 per month, or $119.99 per year (when billed annually), in Canada (both prices are before applicable sales taxes). Candy is offered as part of the Star hub, which hosts programming outside of Disney's core franchises, but is included as part of Disney+ for all Canadian subscribers at no extra charge.

Why was there a delay for Canadians to be able to watch this series?

It's not clear why there was such a long delay in bringing this series to countries outside the United States. However, Candy is co-produced by 20th Television (owned by Disney) and UCP (a division of NBCUniversal). It's possible that there was some aspect of the international distribution that hadn't yet been settled between the two parties.

It may have even been something settled very shortly before the release, considering that Candy had not appeared in Disney+'s listings of July releases in Canada, and the earliest post on social media we can find referencing the release was on July 29.

At one point, we here at WCIW noted that it was just as likely that, depending on which studio controlled the international rights, Candy could have just as easily found its way to a channel like W Network – a channel whose parent company, Corus Entertainment, also has good relations with NBCUniversal, and recently aired the Universal-produced, Hulu-commissioned series The Girl from Plainville.

That said, there have also been delays for various other Hulu (and "FX on Hulu") series in Canada, like The Bear. So it's possible the rights were already settled, and it was simply another instance of whatever was affecting Hulu's other shows, even though the delay for Candy seems to have been quite a bit longer than for the others.

In any event, whatever the issue was has now been settled, and Canadians can now watch Candy on Disney+.
